8 Holiday Events You Don’t Want To Miss

Niagara get’s very busy at this time of year.  Holiday events, festivals and markets are happening all over the region but which ones should you go to?  We’ve compiled our top 8 picks to put on your radar and best of all, some of these events are FREE!  

1. The Winter Festival of Lights Opening Ceremonies – Nov 19

This FREE, family-friendly event will take place in Queen Victoria Park in Niagara Falls.  Featuring cirque entertainment, laser light shows and fireworks.  Of course the finale is when the switch is flipped and MILLIONS of lights are illuminated along an 8 km route.  This illumination festival runs until January 30, 2017.

2. Candlelight Stroll in Niagara-on-the-Lake – Dec 2

This has to be one of the most popular events in the region.  There is a certain magic that is experienced in NOTL when the night sets in and you stroll around historical old town by candlelight.  Listening or joining in the carolling with local choirs and other seasonal entertainment will make this a truly memorable experience.

3. Deck the Falls Holiday Walking Tour – Dec 2-4 & 9-11

A new addition to the Winter Festival of Lights.  13 venues including 10 hotels will be decorated by celebrity designers & Humber students.  They will be competing for the Best Decorated Lobby which is based on your vote! Even though it’s called a walking tour, your ticket includes a WEGO bus pass.  There will be entertainment, food and beverage sampling and other activities at various venues.

4. Port Dalhousie Christmas Market – Dec 9-11

Yet another FREE event for the whole family.  No doubt this market will be a very popular with unique and local handcrafted products sold from European styled wood cabins.  You won’t want to miss Santa’s house, live entertainment, choirs, Christmas carolling, festive food and beverages, a warming lounge, and more. This market will become an annual tradition!


5. Santa Clause Parade in Niagara-on-the-Lake – Dec 10

You won’t want to miss one of Ontario’s BEST Santa Claus Parades!  


6. Niagara Parks Laser Light Show – Nov 20

Another FREE, family-friendly event that takes place at Queen Victoria Park.  Shows start at 5:30pm with the last one at 8:30pm.  What a great way to round out your weekend in Niagara Falls!

7. The 5 Elves Yuletide Tour – Dec 3-4

Here’s an adventure where you can visit 5 of our fave wineries in 1 weekend.  This holiday open house includes special events with unique tastings, food pairing, cocktail ideas or even sleigh rides (if we have snow).  Very affordable at only $20+HST!!


8. Tree Lighting at Canalside – Dec 3

Ok, this isn’t in Niagara but it’s definitely worth mentioning as it’s not that far!  This family-friendly event in Buffalo will feature children’s activities, holiday music, a vendor market, Dickens Carollers, dance performances, giveaways and much more!  Of course Santa Clause will be there with his reindeer and don’t forget the tree lighting.  Food and beverages will be available and don’t forget your skates as the rink will be open.
